I offer guitar lessons in Denton, Texas and online.
My name is Lane Garner and I live in Denton, Texas where I play and teach guitar.
As a teacher I have worked with students of all ages and experience levels. I have experience teaching privately and at music schools around the North Texas and Kansas City areas. I currently teach out of my home in Denton, online, and at Lone Star Music Academy in Flower Mound, Texas.
I compose music for my original band Fundamental which combines original modern jazz with elements of Indian classical music, indie rock, and other inspirations. Fundamental has three releases HEMANDHERE (Armored Records, 2015), f. (Self-released, 2013), and Development (Armored Records, 2012). All three recordings are available directly through the Fundamental website as well as through iTunes, CD Baby, and other fine retailers.
I also regularly lead bands of varying instrumentation with a focus on jazz standards, original music, pop, rock, and folk songs. In addition to focusing on my own music and working as a freelance guitarist I’ve worked in cover bands, on cruise ships, at amusement parks, at churches, and more.
I grew up in the Kansas City area where I started playing publicly at 14 years old in the popular KC ska band the Uprights. In high school I studied with musicians such as Rod Fleeman, Jake Blanton, Bobby Watson, Danny Embry, Cindy Egger, and others. In 2006 I moved to Denton, TX on scholarship at the University of North Texas. Seven years later I ended up a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Jazz Studies. In college I was fortunate to play in many ensembles and study music with Fred Hamilton, Ed Soph, Jose Aponte, Poovalur Sriji, Stephan Karlsson, Richard McClure, Paul LeBlanc, Noel Johnston, John Murphy, and many other great teachers. The UNT jazz guitar program also gave me the opportunity to take lessons with guitarists such as Miles Okazaki, Gilad Hekselman, Jonathan Kreisberg, Lage Lund, Bruce Saunders, John Stowell, Tim Miller, and Oz Noy.
